Unity
Unity Clothing was a project that Dyl and I started talking about towards the end of our year at Mt Aspiring, we got serious about it when we knew that we would be living together in Dunedin. Originally Unity was to be a record label but we had a few issues; firstly, there wasn’t much of an opening in the market, secondly, we were both poor students and thirdly, neither of us had any idea how to run a record company. So with that out of the question we decided that the perfect project to utilize both my design skills and his enormous talent for business would be a clothing company. Unity Clothing however would be a clothing company with a difference, we decided that our clothing needed to reflect our beliefs and convey a social message and well as look awesome. Unity was going to be a company that would raise awareness and support for worthy causes around the world and in New Zealand, it was to be our vehicle to make an impact on the world. We only got through two runs of t-shirts but we had huge plans that we were both really excited about.
With Dyl’s death I lost my business partner and a dear friend. He told me once that it wasn’t a good idea to go into business with a friend but with our partnership, as with our friendship, there was no doubt between us, we were two friends doing something we loved, we communicated about everything. Dyl being the fashionable guy he was, was always there to lend me suggestions as to what we should be putting on these t-shirts, what colours and sizes we should be getting, etc. The day before Dyl’s death he sent me a message saying he was back in Auckland, I invited him to come visit me at the bar where I work in Ponsonby, he told me he’d see what he could do but if he didn’t see me that night we would catch up on Monday and have a business meeting about what we were going to print on the blank shirts I had ordered. We never got to have that catch up or that meeting but I still have the box of blank shirts. I would like to print them up and sell them to Dyl’s friends and family as a tribute to him, originally I was going to ask just enough money to cover the cost of printing but it was suggested to me that I sell them for a bit more and give the proceeds to the scholarship that has been set up in Dyl’s name. I am still working on the design to be printed on the shirts and I can’t give you a release date but for more information and to express any interest, please email me at unityclothingnz@gmail.com. I will also post any updates on this page.
Thank you,
Dan King
